Student Stories

1. I was at school when thousands of cars made something really bad; pollution. Cars are leaking gas, making smoke and that’s why it gets so hot. We should stop polluting the air with gas cars. We should start to use things like bikes, skateboards, scooters, and electric cars so the world is a better place. Sharks and other animals are endangered because of pollution. We have to stop it! The dinosaurs died from an asteroid and we’re using their fossilized remains to kill more animals. Stop using oil and gas. (Alexis)

2. I used to come to school in a car. It leaked oil and spewed gas near and far.  My mom started to cough from all the gas.  My dad said, “You want a bike or a chore pass?”  I said, “ I want an electric bike.  Or one day I might choose to hike. Skateboards, scooters and electric buses are all so clean.  Let’s not drive gas — it’s mean.” (Marc)

Backstory

In spring 2024, fifth graders in Mr. Belmont’s class at Laurel Dell Elementary in San Rafael worked with architects from Youth in Arts, UC Berkeley’s Y-Plan, and mentors from the City of San Rafael, the Canal Alliance, and the Marin School of Environmental Leadership on a challenge from the Union of Concerned Scientists: How can we reduce the environmental impacts of climate change and sea level rise, while creating a more resilient San Rafael? This poster showing Green Transportation options like bikes, buses, scooters, and skateboards was one of their answers.
