Student Stories
One day Jake was riding his bike from school. He was doing impossible tricks on his bike. When he got home all the lights from the city SHUT OFF! Jake was freaking out and didn’t know what to do. After the lights shut off, Jake’s belly was rumbling like he hadn’t eaten in a year. Then out of nowhere, Jake had an idea since he had solar panels. It was day time and the sun was out. The solar panel gave electricity to the house. So now he had light and could cook with no problem because he had an electric stove. He turned the stove on and he picked a meat to cook. After all the struggle he finally was eating a five star meal and it was so delicious, he thought he was in a dream . He was glad he had renewable energy in the solar panels.

Backstory
In spring 2024, fifth graders in Mr. Belmont’s class at Laurel Dell Elementary in San Rafael worked with architects from Youth in Arts, UC Berkeley’s Y-Plan, and mentors from the City of San Rafael, the Canal Alliance, and the Marin School of Environmental Leadership on a challenge from the Union of Concerned Scientists: How can we reduce the environmental impacts of climate change and sea level rise, while creating a more resilient San Rafael? This poster showing a Renewable Energy plan for one home,  including wind turbines, solar panels, and water reuse, was one of their answers.
